Sample Menu for Surgical Patients

Good nutrition greatly aids healing. You may want to acquire soft food items and one of the liquid supplements (Carnation Instant Breakfast, Ensure, Boost, EAS, Myoplex, etc.) for use immediately following surgery. Additional suggestions for “easy to eat” foods can be found below:

BREAKFAST:

• Carnation Instant Breakfast/ Slimfast or any of the above listed liquid supplements
• Cream of wheat, oatmeal or warm soft cereal
  
• Grits (cheese or regular)
  
• Soft muffins or rolls (no nuts or seeds)
  
• Bananas or soft canned fruits (i.e. peaches, pears)
  
• Eggs
  
• Soft breads with butter or margarine (cut off crusts)
  
• Cream cheese

LUNCH & DINNER:

• Canned or homemade soups
  
• Broiled or baked fish
  
• Meatloaf
  
• Tender cuts of meats or chicken
  
• Hot dogs (no buns)
  
• Mashed or baked potatoes (white or sweet)
  
• Pasta
  
• Cheese soufflé
  
• Tender, fresh, canned or frozen vegetables
  
• Soft rolls or breads (no seeds, nuts or crusts)
  
• Beans cooked until soft
  
• Tuna fish or chicken salad (no nuts or celery)
  
• Egg salad
  
• Creamy peanut butter

MISCELLANEOUS:

• Ice cream (without nuts)
  
• Yogurt (regular or frozen)
  
• Baked or sautéed apples (cooked until soft)
  
• Cottage cheese
  
• Sliced cheeses

• Soft cakes (angel food, pound cake)
